Emirates Boeing 777 caught fire after crash-landing at Dubai airport

An Emirates aircraft Boeing 777 flying from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai made an emergency landing at the Dubai International Airport on Wednesday, Aug 3.

All the passengers on board the flight have been safely evacuated.

Smoke was seen rising from the runway after the aircraft landed and firefighters are currently trying to control the blaze.

KATHMANDU, August 2: Sixteen months after the collapse of the historic Dharahara tower in last year's devastating earthquake, the government has made public a detailed design for a similar tower to be built right in front of the ruins of the origional structure.

As per a plan to build a new tower similar to Dharahara, the Department of Archaeology (DoA) on Monday made public a detailed design for the new tower to be raised in front of the two century-old collapsed structure.

Cage Consulte Pvt Ltd, which has prepared the design for DoA, proposes to build an 11-storey tower with a total height of 245 feet. The old tower was nine stories.

Bishnu Panthi, an architect at the private company, said, “The new tower looks similar to the old but it will be a modern architectural design. The new structure will have all modern facilities such as a lift, stairways and a two-storey parking space.”

The new structure has two stories underground which will serve as a museum and as an entrance to the tower. And the new design also proposes a mini-theatre with a capacity of 17 seats at the top of the tower.

According to DoA officials, visitors will be shown a short film about the history of Dharahara.

The new design also includes a fountain at the entrance gate. The building of the Mint Department nearby will be turned into a mint museum and the Central Post Office, which is next to the historic Sundhara (or golden water spout), will be converted into a two-storey underground parking. The cabinet has already decided to relocate those government offices elsewhere.

They also claimed that the new tower can withstand earthquakes of up to 8-point magnitude.

However, the company is not clear about the building materials to be used in the construction of the new tower.

“All the latest construction techniques will be used to make the tower earthquake-resilient,” he told Republica.

Speaking after the presentation, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) Aananda Prasad Pokharel has informed that the Dharahara will be constructed through the public money.

“Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had announced to build it through the public fund. So far we have raised Rs 200 million from the public and we will re-appeal public for more funds. If we are unable to raise sufficient fund, Nepal Telecom has promised us to provide further economic assistance.”

The DoA had hired the consultant on July 10 for the entire conceptual design and given the deadline for 2 months.

The DoA plans to construct the new Dharahara within 3 years of the beginning of construction and it is estimated that almost Rs 2.95 billion will be required to build the new structure.

“The Dharahara premise will also be expanded in the area of 21267.46 square meters,” Director General of DoA Bhes Narayan Dahal said.

A documentary by freelance photo journalists Diane Summers and Eric Valli on the Honey hunters of Nepal documents Gurung tribesmen of west-central Nepal entering the jungle in search of wild honey where they use indigenous tools under precarious conditions to collect honey.

Twice a year high in the Himalayan foothills of central Nepal teams of men gather around cliffs that are home to the world's largest honeybee, Apis laboriosa. As they have for generations, the men come to harvest the Himalayan cliff bee's honey.

This was also documented in a BBC2 documentary in August 2008 entitled Jimmy and the Wild Honey Hunters-Sun. An English farmer travelled into the Himalayan foothills on a honey hunting expedition. The world's largest honeybee, Apis laboriosa is over twice the size of those in the UK where their larger bodies have adapted to the colder climate for insulation. The documentary involved ascending a 200-foot rope ladder and balancing a basket and a long pole to chisel away at a giant honey comb of up to 2 million bees and catch it in the basket.

Homunculus

A homunculus (Latin for "little man", plural: "homunculi"; from the masculine diminutive form of homo, "man") is a representation of a small human being. Popularized in sixteenth century alchemy and nineteenth century fiction, it has historically referred to the creation of a miniature, fully formed human. The concept has roots in preformationism as well as earlier folklore and alchemic traditions.

References to the homunculus do not appear prior to sixteenth century alchemical writings;[citation needed] however alchemists may have been influenced by earlier folk traditions. The mandragora, known in German as Alreona, Alraun or Alraune is one example.[citation needed]

In Liber de imaginibus, Paracelsus however denies that roots shaped like men grow naturally. He attacks dishonest people who carve roots to look like men and sell them as Alraun. He clarifies that the homunculus’ origins are in sperm, and that it is falsely confused with these ideas from necromancy and natural philosophy.[2]

The homunculus has also been compared to the golem of Jewish folklore. Though the specifics outlining the creation of the golem and homunculus are very different, the concepts both metaphorically relate man to the divine, in his construction of life in his own image.[3]

Preformationism, a theory of heredity, claimed that either the egg or the sperm (exactly which was a contentious issue) contained complete preformed individuals called "animalcules". Development was therefore a matter of enlarging this into a fully formed being. The term homunculus was later used in the discussion of conception and birth.

Nicolas Hartsoeker postulated the existence of animalcules in the semen of humans and other animals. This was the beginning of spermists' theory, who held the belief that the sperm was in fact a "little man" that was placed inside a woman for growth into a child. This seemed to them to neatly explain many of the mysteries of conception. It was later pointed out that if the sperm was a homunculus, identical in all but size to an adult, then the homunculus may have sperm of its own. This led to a reductio ad absurdum with a chain of homunculi "all the way down". This was not necessarily considered by spermists a fatal objection however, as it neatly explained how it was that "in Adam" all had sinned: the whole of humanity was already contained in his loins. The spermists' theory also failed to explain why children tend to resemble their mothers as well as their fathers, though some spermists believed that the growing homunculus assimilated maternal characteristics from the womb environment in which they grew.[4]
